| Abstract |
Thomas Cowdin's Journal Account of the Business of the Great & General Court 1784 The business of the Great & General Court included the election of a Senator and Representatives as well as local officers. John Hancock was voted in as Governor of Mass. Various bills were sent to committee- i.e. establishing the value of silver and gold, rebuilding a bridge over the Charles River, a petition of 2 French officers for money to pay for passage back to France, Thomas Brattle petitions to reside in his own native country (?), establish a lottery to widen the Watertown Bridge. Local town business included lowering fines against hawkers, pedlars and petty chapmen, settling the boundary between MA & NY, hearing the petition of a poor woman with 5 children whose husband was lost at sea, who had her 300 acres of land taken from her for taxes, duty taken off tobacco. Many long debates over taxation, regulating juries, care of the poor & almshouse, salaries for State officers and money for Harvard College. |
