Description
|
| Small portrait of Deacon and Mrs. Abel Donne on paper. By the end of the 18th century the hierarchical codification was diminished, in the sense the categories of subject matter was well established there was a descending order to genres
1. history( including religious, historical, literary or mythological narratives, sometimes an allegorical nature)
2.portraiture( the higher the status of the sitter the higher that of the portrait) the depiction here is much more carefree seated in three quarter perspective and could have been fashioned by a younger person. Despite the parallel uses of costume from the twin portrait to the one of Mrs Mary Ames, the general effect is quite different. The deacon seems slightly more informal in his pose and less generalized in his appearance, and his wife very conscious of the powerful public functions portraits possessed.
3. genre in a sense the everyday life
4. landscape
5. still life |
