| Portrait of Amasa Norcross, first mayor of Fitchburg, Republican candidate elected in 1872. Mayor Norcross was among the founding men of the city, playing an influential role in banking, law-making, and civic promotion in Fitchburg prior to his election to the House of Representatives in Washington DC. This portrait done by Ida Tanguay reflects the continued appreciation of the community for the work of the Norcross family and their continued importance to the community in her rendering of Mayor Norcross approximately 100 years after his election. His features reflect the type of nobility of character and spirit that one would associate with highly-regarded public figures, as an iconic man as the first mayor. The actual figure reflects earlier portraits of Mr. Norcross and suggests individuation in his depiction versus simply an idealized representation. |
