Description
A metal breastplate dating from the mid 1800's. The carving is a so-called low level relief. The creator definately had experience in drafting as well, his perspective is very concise and an excellent drawer to deserve the name of draughtsman. The material used here is some sort of metal perhaps a bronze, in keeping with this medium the artist was more than likely adept member of a craft guild; gliders, metal casters, tapestry makers, gold and silver-smiths, as well as maybe a painter or sculptor. The work is three-dimensional and the spacing between the figures and the overlapping creates a early rendition of linear perspective building up real atmosphere around the work to where it takes on the form of simulated air. The subject of this work is in a sense a fusion of the artists own craft status to the new (liberal) status, because of the fact this was a commissioned work. In this period as part of a decorative whole, as outdoor and panel decoration; artists were chosen to pick a particular context of paint, metalworking and ornament in mind.
