| Description |
The H.M. Francis design for the Fitchburg Board of Trade, largely what we are seeing the rejoing of the regothicization of America and the Fitchburg businessmen who carried on a signifigant capital. In all, H.M.Francis designs there is some reference to an upward thrust to extend the height and monumentality of a building . In this particular sketch the emphasis is on the pointed high gothic windows. The rhythm of the windows is doubled over, not to disrupt the tempo and number of the windows when at the roof line there is such heavy banded rustication. The facade used is a Giant order, this is when very large engaged columns are juxtaposed against smaller columns. To complete the design a smaller Roman arch is used. Perhaps the addition of the arch was used to circumvent the grander design that seems is overwhelm and disolve all architectural features. |
