| Notes |
When Robert L. Hunker restored the G.A.R. Hall in 1962, he wanted to make it as close as possible to the original. He searched for over a year everywhere he traveled. He was in Chicago at the Furniture Design show. Lincoln Avenue and other North Side streets were filled with antique stores that were quite good. He was staying at the Drake Hotel and walked to the stores. One was the "Isle of Man" owned by an overweight Irish fellow who specialized in the unusual. He had a small two lamp chandelier that was sold. It caught Robert L. Hunker's eye and he showed the seller the G.A.R. Hall photograph of which he had made several reproduction prints which at the time were expensive. The seller assured Robert that if he gave the seller a print, he would find Robert the chandelier. Several months went by and Robert had other things on his mind far from the chandelier. One very hot day in late June, the seller arrived in Peninsula hot, dirty, and in need of a shower, announcing to the secretary that he had to see Robert as he had "the find." Well, he did. Not only this center one but the one on the stage and the sidelights. They were perfect. Robert was so elated that he showed him the guest suite and bath. He stayed three days shopping the area and amusing Robert at breakfast and dinner. |
