Unabridged republication of the original (1904) edition. The first of four volumes, this one covering the period 1500-1660. This period is characterized by heavy oaken furniture, usually decorated with carvings. Includes photographs of oaken chests, gothic cupboards, carved doors, miserere seats and choir stalls, stools, gaming tables, buffets, canopy beds, chairs, and close-up photographs of decorative details. Includes descriptive text, 15 plates, 115 photographic illustrations, and index.
