| A letter written to Robert A. Cassidy from James A. Beaver. Beaver was Cassidy's former commander in the 148th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry and was governor of Pennsylvania from 1887-91. The letter reads as follows:
Bellefonte, Pa.
18 May 1882
R.A. Cassidy Esq.
Canton Ohio
My dear Sir,
Your letter of the _______ was received on my return home from Harrisburg and read after a very enthusiastic reception given me by my friends and neighbors at home. I am glad to know that the nomination awakens in Ohio favorable responses. It is pleasant also to find that you endorse the sentiment of my nominating speech. I am sure that your influence may be felt in Pennsylvania during the pending campaign. You will be interested to know that some of the Democratic boys of the 148th are moving toward the organization of a 148th club with the view to my personal support. The nominations made at Harrisburg do not satisfy our ultra independents and they will no doubt make a separate ticket on the 24 inst.
It will make the fight interesting but does not necessarily endanger the result.
Cordially yours,
James A. Beaver |
