Object ID 2006.0001.001
Accession# 2006.0001
Object Name Jug
Description A brown glazed earthenware ink jug. Reads "J. Friedrich Grosskarben - Frankfurt" on the side. Top has three grooves and appears to have had a screw on cap or cork secured with a wire similar to a champagne bottle.

From Hunker verbal history, the jug was made in Germany and purchased there by Johannes Ludwig Huonker (Hunker), the first to immigrate from Germany in 1830. He brought in with ink in it to use on the voyage and in the United States. Germany was known for printing and inks. The jug was last used by John Lewis Hunker at his Eastlake secretary until replaced by the fountain pen and small ink bottles.

John Lewis Hunker was the grandfather of Robert L. Hunker and Ada Patricia Dodrill Cowan.
