| Description |
Surrounded by the slums of Port-au Prince, Jean-Pierre Yves creates a fantasy jungle world more beautiful than reality. The jungle abounds with jewel-like fruits and flowers. The animals, both the domesticated bull and the wild giraffes, co-exist in perfect harmony. The three animals dominate the center of the small painting. Largest and most important is the bull, symbolizing the importance of controlling and domesticating the natural world. The bull's face is carefully rendered, giving it a benign, almost human expression. A pair of giraffes in the background rise above the tallest trees. The appearance of African animals in the Haitian landscape shows the perpetuation of African influence in form and design in the work of many Haitian artists. |
