The interior of the bowl is conical in shape. This type of container was used by a kahuna (medical/religious practitioner) to perform sorcery ('ana'ana). The goal of the sorcerer was to cause the death of the victim. To cause death, the sorcerer put eyelashes, fingernails, hair or other body parts of the intended victim into the bowl and placed a curse. *Loan or exhibit of this item is not recommended. Modern practitioners of the Native Hawaiian religion object to seeing sacred objects in museum exhibits.
