Admin/Biog History Yosoto Kobayashi was a Japanese farmer born at Hiroshima, Japan in 1882. He died in California at Santa Barbara in 1943. He arrived in Hawaii in 1898 at the age of 16, having signed a three year sugar plantation contract. He worked at the Hamakua Sugar Mill on the Island of Hawaii from 1898 to 1911. He started the Kobayashi Sodaworks in Hilo and ran it as a small family business until 1941 when the company was ordered to cease operations after the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor. He married his cousin, Fusae Taneko in 1919. They had 8 children, raising 5 to adulthood. Kobayashi died of a heart attack in 1943 while in an internment camp in California.
Abstract Company records of the Kobayashi Sodaworks of Hilo Hawaii, 1918-1941. The files contain correspondence relating to business affairs, personal correspondence, immigration documents, shipping and receiving invoices. Files also contain information relating to the U.S. Government shutdown of Japanese-owned businesses in Hawaii.
