Description 
Anthracite coal is a sedimentary rock that is biogenic, that is, it is built up of material produced by living organisms. Anthracite is glassy in appearance, usually dark brown to black in color. Anthracite occurs in Paleozoic rocks, in particular the Carboniferous period in North America. It occurs in the Appalachian Mountains of Pennsylvania.
