Description
A ring pounder formed of vesicular basalt. The upper part forms a convex curve, or arch, which slopes downward and outward from the narrower arch above to the slightly wider base below. The corner edges between the two surfaces and the narrow sides are rounded off so that the under, pounding surface is elliptical in shape, with its long axis running from side to side. This pounder is reddish-gray in color. Peter Buck describes this artifact in Arts and Crafts of Hawaii and states that this type is found uniquely on Kauai.
